This was a good weekend. I had nothing planned, but like always, things worked out. My oldest girlfriend called on Friday night to tell me she was coming into the city, and we agreed to rendezvous downtown and then go on to Haight. Two buses and two cable cars--passing by without stopping--later, I called her cell (thank the lord for cells!) and let her know the sitch, so instead she came into north beach. Wow, we had SO much catching up to do, it was astonishing. While talking, we learned some interesting things. We are both moving to New York next year!! We are seriously considering sharing an apartment, which will be phenomenal. I mean, as kids, we always said we'd live together in New York, but you know how all little girls make dreams like that with their best friends. Well for once it might actually happen! I trust her implicitly and I think living with her would be a good (albeit difficult, we're just like sisters and have that relationship) experience. She is very motivated in what she does, and her creativity is inspiring, I mean it. We went out for sushi while we were doing our catching up and I was totally impressed by her convictions. I wish that I could say I was as confident in myself as I am in her, lol. She, too, wants to be in the 'business' but it is her goal to create documentaries. Already she's produced/written/directed a hit cable access show at her college, and she and a friend made a calendar for her school all by herself. On Saturday Alex and I went to the Burning Spear, a great Reggae band Alex had seen at Reggae on the River. We managed to finaggle ourselves up to the front and by the end I was right at the stage with no one between me and the singer, in dead center. Best spot in the house! And the entire time we were grooving to the music. It was so laid back and mellow, and at random times we would start dancing with the rastas next to us. The only annoying thing was this massive older white guy in a beard who was SO stoned, and kept bellowing "Rasta" into my face, the sour odor of the pot blasting into my face. And he would sing to the song on and off in a really loud obnoxious offkey voice. Other than that everything was great. Today I headed to the beach with Katie since it's actually been HOT here! (Who would have guessed??) We got there early since she had to be at work at three, but by the time we had to leave the beach was so packed you culd hardly make your way through the bodies at some parts. The beach was really nice today, though. After finishing our picnic we discovered that the water was actually a manageable temp and we would have gone swimming, but the beach under the water was so rocky that it was too painful to walk on them. I don't remember it being that way last year. Oh well. So finally we gave up and strolled down to the other side of the beach--the nude side, lol. Katie and I said we were pretty tempted to go nude except we wouldn't out of fear that someone we knew would walk by and there we'd be. How mortifying! Instead, we gawked at the people in the nude from behind the safety of our sunglasses, and jeez! Some of those guys you wonder why they'd want to display. . .so little. We were very amused, which probably makes us really evil. The whole point of nude beach is to be accepting of the human body and here we were, totally undermining that! Oh well. We headed back to our clothed side of the beach after we'd seen enough and perused our beach mags and basked. When we finally had to go we were very grumpy because it was just getting crowded and the air was the perfect temp. But Katie's work called. I headed over to the North Beach Jazz Festival. This has been the weekend of music! The yuppies abounded in their 'Friends-y' clique and I probably would have felt like one of them (I was wearing a black halter, a-line red floral skirt and espadrilles, total yup weekend wear) except for the fact that I was with me mom! We sat on a blanket and listened to Charles Mingis while I read from S.F. Weekly. Gotta love these summer North Beach afternoons, especially when the weather is so gorgeous. Well Katie and I plan on hitting the beach again tomorrow, fully prepared, armed with radio, chair, umbrella, and water sox! That means I have some errands to run, so I've got to go. I just hope that it's just as gorgeous tomorrow as it is today!
